iMovie 09 version 8.0.6. won't let me import PLEASE HELP

Hello!

So I'm having multiple problems right now. First of all I'm trying to import a file (about 5 mins) to iMovie. iMovie will continually crash, I even deleted all my event videos (not my 3 projects 2 mins in all) thinking it was a space issue.... Then when I tried and that didn't work I imported all my videos back and it imported all my videos except my 5 min video. Now I'm wondering if it might be because it was filmed from a Samsung phone, but I don't see how that would be a problem. I'm also wondering if it's an upgrade issue but I don't see an upgrade any where. Do I have to buy the new the latest version of iMovie? One thing that I also haven't done is upgrade to the iLife? It's to hard to find where I install or upgrade the new app. Thank you for reading please help!
