how do I add a device so I can sync it

I have been using this iPod classic for several years. Now I cannot sync it to my library. I added several books on CD and I want to transfer them to my iPod but I cannot sync it. I have checked devices and it does not show up. My iPhone is there but not the iPod. I am running the current version of iTunes, Win 7 and Firefox.

When I connect the iPod, it shows up and all the music on it is there.

Ideas please.
