Power Mac G5 Has Slow Internet

I have a Power Mac G5 single core 1.8 GHz with 1GB of RAM. It is not AirPort enabled, is running Leopard, and was made at the beginning of 2004. After a long conversation with a friend of mine, I found out that the ethernet card is too outdated to process all of the information that is coming in. I can't bring it into the Apple Store because it is obsolete, and it's from 2004 so I can't chat or have a phone call. Any ideas? (The ethernet is the bottom port right above the telephone jack.)

Hi,try these 2 things...

For 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

(There may be better or faster DNS numbers in your area, but these should be a good test).

Click OK.

Also, turn off IPv6:

System Preferences » Network » Ethernet>Advanced » TCP/IP tab » Configure IPv6

Or whatever Interface you use.

Wait...no. It used to be very laggy, now its lots of swirly sign but smooth! Maybe I can fix the rest of the problem somehow?

What speed Internet do you have?

What do you get for raw speeds here, for both Java & Flash, DSL Reports...

I tried it on here, my MaBook Air, and it has 1.8 mbps download with 3.8 mbps upload, but we pay for 15 mbps download and 5 mbps upload. I will try PowerMac in the morning.

Even the slow G5 1.6 GHz had Gigabit Ethernet, so it should handle 200 mbps easily!?

Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select Ethernet & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right?

I did the test over wifi, I am not going to do the Power Mac until morning. I wonder if they have anything to do with each other, however my macbook air seems to be much faster than the Power Mac. Could it be that the ethernet card is too outdated?

If you're using WiFi, Airport extreme card in PowerMac G5 can handle 54 Mbps at best.

Speed test on Power Mac which does not have AirPort anymore is 1.3 Mbps both up and down.

Wrong port I think,G5s have 2 Ethernet ports.

Mine (on the back) Has a wifi port, bluetooth port, optical audio in and out ports, two USBs, a fire wire 400 and 800, audio in and out, a single gigabit ethernet port and a telephone port. On the front, a USB, audio out, fire wire 400 and the power button with light.

So, in Network Utility the interface you're using shows all zeros?

Likely en0 on yours...
