Very slow 2008 mac

Installed 4 gybes ram and upgraded to Yosemite 10.10 OS. System painfully slow and activity monitor usually slows almost all of the ram being used. However, adding up the applications running only accounts for half of the ram. What is using the other half and why dosen't it show? Tried reseting SMC which helped ram for a short time. Both internet and stand alone applications take way too long. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks. John

Looking at your profile, it seems that you started from an intel based mid 2007 machine. I assume you now have a total of 6Gb RAM which is the most it will take. I suspect you may have a malware (not a virus) infection.

Download and apply the Etrecheck program, then publish the results here.

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

This will enable us to check out your system. It is safe to do this.

Hello John,

You can try this. Run the etrecheck report using Firefox if your can. Keep the screen open. Then, using Safari, find your way to this thread and press reply to this post. Then press html (near the smilie) and your post may look a bit odd with lines and things. Then highlight the report and drag it into the reply section. Then post the reply.

The green square that may have been thwarting you will not appear once html is opened.

Incidentally this will help me confirm if you can put 6Gb memory in your machine.

Sorry about the delay.

Well done to stevejobsfan for getting it on show. I 'm sure he'll come back with more info on top of mine.

And it was worth it to you to send the report, though it will mean some work to correct all the problems. First you must rid yourself of MacKeeper and Macbooster. When they have gone,, disable or remove Trusteer. All these programs are sapping your computer's strength and messing up your system. Mac's do not need anti-virus or performance boosters. I also see pctools anti-virus; whatever that is, remove it.

Here are is a link to help you.

MacKeeper was only a demo version and never paid for. I can't delete it with the link provided. Keeps saying it's missing the internet. MacBooster and Pc Tools antivirus are strange in that they don't show up in applications or utilites. Iantivirus was easy to delete. Mackeeper was only recently downloaded in a moment of frustration and could not have been the primary cause of slowness. Thanks. John
