restore lost iphone4s without a sims card

Someone just returned an iPhone4s that I had lost over a year ago. How do I turn it into a functional iPod/computer? I hooked it up to my computer and it automatically updated to IOS8 and now asks for an activated sim card. All I want to do with this old phone is use it as an iPod and media device. Thank you in advance for your support and attention to this matter.

To activate the phone, you need the SIM card previously used or the one in your current iPhone. The SIM card then can be removed to use it as an iPod Touch
