iTunes freezes my computer every time I open it

My friend's family just recently gave me one of their iPads (gen 1), and I figured I'd just use it for movies and music since there aren't many apps that still use iOS 5. This my only recent Apple product so I had to install iTunes. Once everything was installed, I tried opening it and it froze my entire computer. I tried control, alt, delete; it did nothing. I had to force restart my computer and tried again, thinking it was something else. I then tried holding down control and shift to start it in safe mode, but it still froze. Running out of patience, a little ticked off. I've uninstalled and have reinstalled iTunes and Java, don't really know what else to do. I have Windows 8 and have download the most recent iTunes and Java
