Why does the iPhone 6 and the Apple watch both add data to the Health app?

Tthe Apple Watch does not have GPS, so the data collected by the iPhone is used to more accurately calibrate walking, running and biking distances. The data is not, or at least should not be added together, just compared.

The Health app prioritizes the data. It won't count both if there is data collected for the same thing at the same time.
