Macbook Pro Mid 2009 with magsafe 2 ?

Hello

I have a Macbook Pro mid 2009 with a magsafe type 'L'' (normal-old one) and the cabel peel off and stop working at all... i want to buy a new one, but i've heard magsafe 2 are better, but I dont know if they work with my old macbook, or i can use them freely with no problems.
