I have created a backup iTunes library on an external hard drive. How do I sync new music on the computer hard drive to the back up drive?

I have tried using the 'Tips for using iTunes with and External Hard Drive' instructions which are very specific (option, launch iTunes external drive, Organize Library, Consolidate files, etc.) but the new music never gets copied to the external drive.
