Will iMac 5K run on OS X 10.8?

I have a Mac Pro early 2008 that is being phased out in favor of an iMac 5K. Some few older programs need to be run on OS X 10.8.

So the question is, can I take a hard drive from the older Mac Pro, put it in an external housing and optionally boot the iMac 5K with that older OS to run those old Apps?

Will I be able to boot from other externalized drives from the old Mac Pro? I'm beta testing the next Yosemite.

Mac Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10), 6 GB RAM

The general rule is that no Mac can run an operating system level created before that Mac model was introduced, because that operating system won't know how to work with any new hardware. That would say no, you can't expect 10.8 to run on an iMac 5K.

We're not supposed to discuss beta software here.
