Using a Second Monitor on Late 2012 iMacHi

Hi all. I've tried a couple different monitors to use as second displays for my 27" late 2012 iMac but none seem to be compatible up to the 2560x1440 resolution to match the iMac's display. They get up to 1080p but cannot reach their full resolution. If anyone knows of any displays they have used other than Apple's own thunderbolt display it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

What cable connection are you using and what option does your external monitor(s) have...?

Both Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters and Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters only support monitors up to 1920 x 1200.

For monitors greater that 1920 x 1200, you need will need to use either a Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter or a Mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

For example:

if the best your monitor supports is DVI, then you need a Dual-Link DVI adapter.

if your monitor supports Display Port input, then your best bet is a Mini DisplayPort to Display Port cable.
