We have two MacBooks and one of them quit working altogether. I'm going to take it to the genius bar but in the mean time, Ineed to access a file from the broken computer.
How do I access that computer's time machine backup from the other computer?
I can get to a point where I see the files from that computer but get an error message saying "these files can't be opened because it is in a time machine backup"

This isn't working either. I'm running yosemite and Pondini's Time Machine FAQ's look like they're mostly for older operating systems.

Use Time Machine application to restore data from a Time Machine backup. Do not attempt to use the Finder.

Connect the disk to your Mac, select the Time Machine menu whilst holding the 'alt' key. Now select 'Browse other backups'.
That should put you into the Time Machine 'space' UI, so you can find the required files in the history & restore them.
