Open the airport utility and click the Express.. a list of errors or problems will appear.. if it needs a firmware update (most unusual if it hasn't already had it).. then you can see what is the issue.

Version 6.3.5 is available. In Airport Utility > Preferences you can set it to check for updates.
I am running os x yosemite version 10.10.1
Yosemite 10.10.3 is the current one.
As for the flashing amber, maybe a reset is needed. Resetting an AirPort base station FAQ - Apple Support

I opened up airport utility
it says "no configured airport base stations have been found"
"airport utility will continue searching"

looked in preferences - the box is now ticked for check for updates daily. thank you
will update my os to 10.10.3
and see what happens
