I finally got it to work.
Removed the battery on motherboard and waited 15 minutes before putting it back in.
While waiting I removed the old card and put in the new one.
After the 15 min I booted and it recognised the card,no problem, checked graphics properties
and it showed the new card.
So I guess the battery is used to power the boot settings info, which had the old card in the startup sequence?
