So David, I figure you're the best guy to ask about this. See, I just purchased one, and upon hooking it up via Firewire (front port on my G5), Final Cut Pro (5.0.4) doesn't recognize it.

I'm using "Non-controllable Device" and DV-NTSC 48kHz as my Capture presets, but FCP isn't seeing any video.

In the manual, it states that the DV connection is strictly an IN and can't be used as a OUT. After reading that I noticed that the front of the recorder shows DVR-533-H (no "S").

So I'm wondering about a few things that maybe you can help me with.

1) Maybe I'm missing something in the capture process and it should work fine?
2) Perhaps you and I are running different versions of FCP and that's the culrpit?
3) Is it possible that there's a DVR-533-H and a DVR-533-H-S and the missing S on my machine is the problem?

I'd really appreciate your thoughts, and of course the thoughts of anyone else willing to jump in.

Joni,

I've just test-captured some footage from a DVD using the same setup as before (FCP 4.5 / G5 / OS 10.3.9 / QT 6.5.2) and it does work.

It could be a difference in the model, or in the FCP versions that's causing it not to work on your setup. I do know that Pioneer discontinued that model shortly after I purchased it ... perhaps the newer model was changed(?)

Hey David,

Thanks for responding so quickly, and for testing it out on your end. I looked into the DVR-633 as well, but they discontinued the Firewire connection in favour of USB only so that option was out.

It's funny, I had hoped that I'd be able to capture from DVD with the 533 but was skeptical given all of the different models and software versions, etc. But this one isn't even recognizing FCP as an output device from which to record DVD's, which is odd. It doesn't see my firewire connection.

I did just hook it up an hour ago though, so I'll keep at it. Hmmm...
