They do not save to the desk top and I've search through all my files. I just can't find them anywhere. It makes the sound as if its taking a screen shot. I've tried both ways (full screen and sectional) nothing works. Any one else experienced this? Do I need to update my settings or something?

First thing to check are the settings in System Preferences, Keyboard, Shortcuts, Screen Shots. For example, it is possible that you are sending your screen shots to the clipboard rather than a file.

Do you have Dropbox installed?
If so,screenshots may be stored in Dropbox.
