SIM Failure - Invalid SIM

An iPhone 4S, running iOS8.3. Carrier is EE, in the UK.

I am increasing getting the "SIM Failure" message, followed by "Invalid SIM" at top left where the carrier would usually be. Switching in and out of Airplane mode does not solve this. It is solved for a short period by powering off and then on.

SIM card has not been removed since the day I got the phone - more than 36 months ago.

Any suggestions as to how I can resolve it?

Other than get a new SIM from EE I have tried most of what is advised on If you see 'No SIM' alert on iPhone - Apple Support

iPhone 4S, iOS 8.1, iTunes 12.0.1.26 on Windows 8.1

If you have gone as far as restoring as new and testing before restoring the backup and it still doesn't work then you should certainly try a new sim ,they do go bad .You should certainly eject it and try it again as a matter of course first

Apple Support would expect you to have tried that before other action is taken including a new sim
