Remote will not pair with iMac

I just received my Apple remote, and can not pair with my iMac (pressing the Menu and Fwd/FF button simultaneously does nothing). I already have a trackpad and wireless mouse. Any idea what gives?

Hey pedal_pusher,

You may need to verify that "Disable remote control infrared receiver" checkbox does NOT have a check in it in System Preferences -> Security -> Advanced in order to get your remote to work with your Mac.

  1. Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu in the upper-left menu bar.
  2. Choose Security from the View menu.
  3. Click the lock and enter your Administrator password if necessary.
  4. In OS X Lion v10.7 or later, click the "Advanced" button in the lower-right corner.
  5. Enable the "Disable remote control infrared receiver" checkbox.
  6. In OS X Lion v10.7 or later, click the OK button.

pedal_pusher,

It may be that your Mac does not have an IR receiver. You can check this in System Profiler.

Some Macs do not include a built-in infrared (IR) receiver. Computers without an IR receiver can instead work with the Remote application for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. Check your Mac's documentation, or look in System Profiler(within the USB section) to see if your Mac includes an IR receiver.

If you feel that your Mac does have an IR receiver, but it's not appearing in System Profiler, resetting your Mac's SMC may help get it to recognize the receiver.
