What is the best way to migrate data from a MacBook Pro to the new MacBook

I've got a new MacBook on the way. I know I can migrate data using Time Machine. However, is there any way to use a cable and adapters to go directly between the two machines. If so, what would I need to obtain?

Crossover cables are not needed. However, you would need 2 Ethernet adapters and probaly a USB-C to USB adapter.

The easiest approach is to use a cloned or time machine backup on a USB3 external drive with the USB-C to USB adapter.

I used a cloned backup, something that I have as a matter of routine, with Setup Assistant on my new Retina MacBook. It only took about 2 hours to complete.
