AirPort Utility won't recognise AirPort Extreme base station

AirPort Utility 6.3.5 (on an iMac running Yosemite) says "No configured base stations have been found...." even though it also says internet is connected and gives the correct info about my connection. Of course, the only way it could see the internet is via the AirPort Extreme base station.

The network connection is working fine for all sorts of other programs, including Mail, Safari, Screen Sharing, Finder file transfers, and ChronoSync (backup).

With the iOS AirPort Utility, the base station pops up almost instantly. The iOS devices and the Mac are on the same network.

I can't find any way to search/browse manually for the base station, or to just give Utility the address. How do your force it to behave? (Or give it a hand?)

iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Yosemite has a number of network bugs, and you are experiencing one of them first hand.

If you have not already powered off and restarted both your Mac and the AirPort router, now would be a good time to do this.

As far as having the utility search for the AirPort using an IP address.......

Open AirPort Utility

Click the File menu in the upper left corner of the screen

Click Configure Other

Enter the IP address of the AirPort router....if you know it....and the base station password. If the AirPort is performing as the "main" router on your network, it will have an IP address of 10.0.1.1

Otherwise, you can try to exterminate some of the bugs in Yosemite by checking a few settings that tend to act up on a regular basis.

Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)

Open Network

Click on WiFi to highlight it

Click on Advanced in the lower right corner of the window

Click the TCP/IP tab

Make sure that the setting for Configure IPv6 is set to Link Local Only

Click OK

Click Apply

Then repeat the same sequence as above, except click on Ethernet to highlight it, and follow the exact same steps

Restart the Mac and the AirPort router and see if AirPort Utility will operate more reliably

That did it, thanks! Hopefully it won't lose it's brain again too soon.

All I did was make the Network changes to the IPv6 setting, and reboot.

(I'll remember the link to the AirPort rest as well, but tried to avoid such and Extreme [pun intended] solution if I could. Anything that resets a password in the network can have a domino effect that might not be apparent for months - when you're in a hurry on an important task on another device.)
