Q: iPhone 5 16gb in recovery mode after a long-needed update and wants to restore, no backup

So I've had my iphone5 16gb for nearly two years and it has worked flawlessly.  However, like many others, I always had issues with storage, as it would always be close to full capacity (because apparently on around 13gb is free to use on a 16gb phone). This has often led me to difficult situations when dealing with pictures, apps, and so forth and what I'd want to keep or get rid of for more space.  This has also caused issues with backing up data on my computer (pc), since iCloud can only hold so much for free and external apps for storage had never crossed my mind.  To the point, my iphone had ios version 7.1.1 since I hadn't updated it in months due to low storage, until I finally cleared up enough space for ios version 8.3 (which my computer claimed needed around 600mb of available space).  The phone was working perfectly, I connected it to my computer, selected update on iTunes, waited, until an error message appeared with the sign (-1).  After this, my iphone plunged into a world of darkness, save for the traditional sign of a usb cable and an iTunes icon on the screen.  iTunes and every discussion I've seen regarding similar such issues always led to the conclusion that I would need to restore the phone to factory conditions.  Given I have no backup and have no intention of deleting my personal information (such as pictures and notes, given contacts and music is already synced into iTunes), what are my options?  I find it hard to believe that restoring it and deleting everything is the only option, especially considering the phone was working fine before and Apple is the one at fault (from what I believe and from the words of others).

iPhone 5, iOS 7.1.1

Believe it!  Your data is already gone.

I find it hard to believe that you've had an iPhone for 2 years and never backed up, particularly since you were having memory issues and you have a computer without the memory limitations of free iCloud.

Apple is the one at fault (from what I believe and from the words of others).

Nope, you are at fault for not following basic maintenance procedures by not backing up.  Then again, you may find it easier on yourself to blame Apple with utterly vague accusations like "the words of others."

Then please enlighten me and tell me where I should have backed up everything on my iphone, because Apple certainly did not, other giving me 5 worthless gb of free space that, anyone that actually uses technology knows,is nothing.  My iCloud says I have 2.2gb of space remaining.  I am certainly not at fault when my phone refuses to backup to my computer because of the lack of adequate storage space on iCloud and won't backup to anywhere else on the computer for some reason, a reason you'll probably state in another reply that is an "utterly vague" response.  Furthermore, I highly disrespect your tone for a serious problem I am having.  Any Apple user would certainly know that there are in fact "memory limitations" of "free" iCloud, unless you choose to pay extra monthly and indulge their capitalistic needs.  As I've stated, I have not performed a backup for my iphone.  Perhaps I should have been a little more precise and have said that I've tried to perform backups, but none were successful due to iCloud storage and issues regarding the pc.  Do not patronize me when approximately 55 million people in the U.S own Apple products and the majority, considered followers under "blind loyalty", experience issues daily with Apple's inexcusable and nearly consecutive updates, many of whom were in similar situations as myself and had all their data wiped.  So please, whoever you are with an unpleasant personality, provide me with a plausible solution, even if it is with future storage management/ say I'm screwed in a more polite way or you can just hold your mouth.  Thank you.

Huh?? Backing up to the iTunes library on your computer is perfectly available.  Until iOS 7 (2013), it was the only way.

Choosing an iOS backup method (Should I use iTunes or iCloud to back up my iOS device?)

unless you choose to pay extra monthly and indulge their capitalistic needs

Well said by THE ENTITLED who demand free service to their specifications

many of whom were in similar situations as myself and had all their data wiped.

None of whom lost any data whatsoever when they adhered to the basic dogma of personal computing for the last 30+ years, to ALWAYS BACKUP BEFORE UPDATING >

Now, was a logical reply of me having the option to backup to iTunes really that troubling for you?  I did not know that nor do I recall ever having that option, but that's basic human nature of forgetting.  Coming from a pompous and poor excuse of a probably unlicensed person such as yourself, how dare you refer to myself as one of "THE ENTITLED".  I am a young adult about to enter college, who is not very technologically aware, and I would rather not pay for storage from a multi-million dollar corporation, particularly when the lowest option is 20gb (I do not have the funds, no matter the cost).  And yes, maybe I did overlook something I should have valued as more important, but way to implicate that most Apple owners are senseless because I can go on almost any forum regarding Apple products and cite people whose data was lost, even if they backed it up.  Finally, Apple is notorious for its harmful and glitchy updates (i.e. ios versions ..., 7, 8, 8.2, 8.3), so though I lacked certain information to backup my phone correctly, you have no sane right to say I am entirely at fault when Apple tech was responsible for doing this to my phone and doing this to many other Apple users.  So again, thank you for the one constructive piece of advice you've given me, and I hope I'll never have the pleasure of speaking to you again.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the error -1 is generally a hardware error. Even if you are able to restore the device and had a backup, it would probably still fail. You need to have the device checked for the hardware failure. You probably need a new device.

I could just go to an Apple store to have the device checked, correct?  I am just very busy this week and need this resolved soon, so specifics are a must.

You can make an appointment at the nearest Apple store to have the device checked, yes. If it is hardware, since the device is probably out of warranty, you would be offered an out of warranty replacement, and for the iPhone 5, the cost is $269 US.

One more question: regarding the backup, which you said may possibly be pointless if it is in fact a hardware issue, where do you go on iTunes if you want an idea of how much data was backed up (if I did actually set iTunes as the backup location)?  This is my first time experiencing issues like this so this is way beyond my spectrum of knowledge.

Take a look at this support document which details what data is backed up in iTunes. About backups in iCloud and iTunes - Apple Support

There are also links there to tell you how to make backups, both in iTunes and iCloud.

You're welcome. I hope your luck holds out, but I'm afraid you may have hit the end of the line, and may have to get a new device. Good luck.

Yes, take it io Apple. You may need to replace the phone, but that's far from certain.  Regardles, your peronal data is lost without a backup.

Incidentally, everything about backups mentioned in my post is in the iPhone User Guide, written for the novice and at a 6thgrade reading level. It's something that someone such as yourself who is "not very technologically aware" would want to read, particularly if you want to post about how previous advice is unbelievable and blame Apple for your problems and ignorance.

You also didn't read the forum Terms of Use you agreed to when you joined, or you would know that this is a user-to-user forum, not Apple.  There is no "license."
