HDMI 30 pin adapter on iPad2

I Purchased a genuine apple 30 pin HDMI adapter model A1422 to use on my iPad 2 running iOS 8.3.

I plug it in and it doesn't display anything on my TV through HDMI, and doesn't show in settings, general, about.

When I use the same cable on my iPhone 4s running same iOS it works perfectly.

have tried hard reset etc but no joy.

anyone got got any ideas please?
