I don't know if it is a coincidence but since i am using an Apple Watch my calendar app on my iPhone and iPad only shows the events for the current month (the recuring events are displayed). I have a friend who also got an Apple Watch and he doesn't have the problem.

Try logging out of your calendar account then logging back in.

In the iCloud settings on my iPhone I deselected and reselected the calendar setting. Unfortunately, I didn't get my calendars back.
I finally found why my Calendar app was showing the events for only one month: for some reason (after pairing my Apple Watch?) the option “1 month” got selected in the Synchronize section of Mail, Contacts, Calendar in the iOS settings. I set it to “All events” and now everything is fine.
