I just bought a brand new ipod shuffle. I plugged it into my computer and it says USB Device not recognized. I just downloaded the latest version of itunes earlier today. My computer has automatic window updates. Any suggestions?

I would suggest that you troubleshoot using the steps in this article -
iPhone, iPad, or iPod not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support
You have already done some of those steps, such as updating iTunes, and there is no need to repeat them.
