I understand you are having trouble getting your iPhone 6 Plus to focus when you are taking a group photo.
Forgive me if this seems like an obvious question, but are you actually tapping on the screen, so that the iPhone's camera will focus on that area?
Also, if you have a protective case on the iPhone, try removing it to see if you get different results.

http://help.apple.com/iphone/8/#/iph1e767793cWith an iSight camera, tapping the screen sets the focus and the exposure, and face detection is temporarily turned off. To lock the exposure and focus, touch and hold until the rectangle pulses.
Give these suggestions a try, and see if you get different results. If the images are still out of focus, the next step would be to make an appointment with a Genius in an Apple Retail store nearby or an Apple Authorized Service provider. They can physically inspect your iPhone to determine what might be causing the issue.
