How do I remove recurring iCal event notifications in OS X which aren't even showing up in the calendar

I have a couple of iCal events, one a birthday and the other a weekly reminder which show up in the notification centre every day. If I click on them the calendar opens but they are not there to edit or delete. I want to delete them permanently. Currently I am not even using iCal and have No other calendars set up on it, yet I still receive these notifications.

Suggestions please....
