Having Problems Downloading Snow Leopard 10.6.3

I have an old 2009 Imac and it recently died and so I had to reformat the hard disk and reload the software I used the CD's that it came with to start it up and it now works fine running on 10.5.8. I now want to upgrade to Yosemite. So I bought a Snow leopard CD and tried to update the software but it will only get to about a quarter of the way done and it will stop and say that it will continue to load after restarting when it restarts it spits out the disk and loads back into 10.5.8 every time.
