compass symbol
Next to the battery icon on the top-right corner is a compass symbol (heading northwest), which I assume means that my GPS is on. How can I turn it off? Thanks.

Means Location Services are on AND an app is requesting a location fix. As Chris points out, there is an indication of the culprit in the path he provided. Can be a major battery drain if repeated too often, which some apps like Facebook, Twitter, etc., are prone to do. That can also be controlled in the settings.
