apple watch counts knitting as "steps" for activity tracking

I've noticed that my new Apple Watch believes that I'm taking quite a number of steps (thousands, sometimes) while sitting still and knitting. Is there a way to stop this from occurring without taking off the watch (or having to remember to tell it I'm knitting)?

Not necessarily so .... my fitbit flex and charge never counted steps when I was knitting. My apple watch counts TONS of steps knitting. If apple can't come up with a fix I'll have to start taking it off when knitting. But then I won't get my stand prompt which I like.

I knit English style and am right handed. My left hand, on which I wear the watch, tends to be fairly still, but not completely still, when I knit. I would think, as ccwife42 mentioned, that it would realize that I'm sitting still while this is occurring. It might be unrealistic, but I would like it to be smart enough to realize that I'm sitting still and haven't told the workout tracker that I'm doing some sort of stationary exercise, and therefore, this must not be "steps." Mostly it just seems to be a small number of steps recorded. But there was a night when I was working on lace that it recorded thousands of steps while I sat and struggled through a few rows for 1.5 hours. It's not that this is a huge issue, but it is slightly frustrating.

and mention this thread 7066922 so Apple can see problems with the watch.


Depends on the actual movement of the arm the watch is on - is suppose - of course if you are in a rocking chair that may also count.

It may help to calibrate your watch. Calibration should improve the accuracy of various fitness and activity-related estimations made by both the Activity app and the Workout app.


Check also that your personal information is accurate:

- On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Health > check and, if necessary, edit your birthdate, gender, height and weight.

To expand on my previous reply:


Calibrating the watch helps it to recognise arm movements that relate to walking (and running) and also to better estimate distances that you have covered when taking steps at different speeds. This may therefore also help it to better recognise when you are not walking or running.


It learns by combining knowledge of your arm movements (using data from the watch's accelerometer) with knowledge of pace and distance (using the Location Services / GPS feature on your iPhone).


Calibrating your watch can improve the accuracy of steps and other estimations in the Activity App.


If you have already had your watch for a while, it may help to reset your calibration data and start afresh:

On your iPhone, in the Watch app, go to: My Watch (tab) > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > tap on Reset Calibration Data.


To calibrate again, follow the instructions in the support article below, including:


  • Record Outdoor Walk and/or Outdoor Run workouts using the Workout app on your watch.
  • Do this for around 20 minutes at each of the speeds at which you normally walk or run.
  • Whilst doing so, take your iPhone with you, with Location Services turned on.
  • Allow your arm to swing naturally during the workout.
