macbook pro keeps disconnecting from wifi airport

My macbook keeps disconnecting from the airport. Then it takes a while to reconnect. It also does this when it goes to sleep - has to then reconnect to the airport and takes a while. The airport is right there on the desk with my computer. It didn't used to do this - do I need to take it to the apple store? please help 🙂 Thanks!!
