How to find the source of regular lag spikes?

Here is my problem:


Since a few days ago, I am experiencing serious lag spikes on my network. The consequences are, that VOIP calls are dropped and other low latency services (ok, call it gaming) are failing.

I talked to my ISP and I just connected one machine to the connection and there were no lag spikes. So the problem must be internal, rather than external. For your information, I have about 20 macs behind airport firewalls. A number of them are servers, such as file, email, authentication and web servers.


I have been hunting around to see if any of the macs had any run-away processes such as powerd or discoveryd. Where that happened, the processes were terminated without resulting in any noticeable improvement.


My next step would be to turn each mac off individually and see if that helps the situation. However, I thought I pose the question to the community if there is any software solution or other ideas to track the culprit down.
