iTunes not showing current song information in LCD panel

Just noticed today that the playback area is not showing what's currently playing. Therefore it's impossible to skim through the audio or see what exactly iTunes is doing.

I have removed ~/Library/com.apple.iTunes.plist and all other plists with iTunes in the name.

Sometimes it will show the up/down arrows on the right hand side of the red box in the attached image (like to switch to see if what's syncing vs. playing) but clicking the up or down arrow will not do anything to affect the display.

Only when I click the button to bring up the mini player am I able to skim the audio or see playback position. New iTunes library works the same way.

Any other ideas of what to check/do/set would be greatly appreciated.
