Apple charger adapter not working.

I have always charged my iphone4 and ipad mini using Apple cables and a generic double adapter plugged into the mains electricity. I now need to use the apple adapter (single) and neither the phone nor the ipad will charge using the apple adapter. Is there a setting to correct this? Or I am I locked into the generic adapter forever? It works fine but I left it somewhere else and need to recharge now!
