My MacBook Pro is approximately 6 months old and I have started to notice it gets very hot on the right hand side but not the left, is this normal?

That is where the macbook pro gets circulation out so yes it's fine.
Actually, the air vent is pretty much along the entire back (except for both edges) - see this screenshot:
(this was one of the few images I could find; my 2012 MBP's vent is actually longer than that).
In any case, you do have a one year hardware warranty, so I'd recommend you take advantage of it and make an appointment at your nearest Genius Bar so they can have a look.
