Extended desktop distorted

Hi! I just purchased a 22" Element TV to use as a second monitor. I hooked up my computer to the TV with a VGA cable and the TV mirrored my computer perfectly (only in a 1600 x 900 resolution) but as soon as I try to make my monitor an extended desktop, the picture on the television distorts completely. I've tried every resolution and nothing helps. I assumed it was the TV's fault but I called their support and they said I must be doing something wrong. I've had several second monitors as extended desktops before and I've never had a problem with it until now, so I'm not too sure what I need to do to fix it. I'm sure they're a simple solution, I just don't know what it is.

Any ideas?
