Q: Preferences error message

I cannot open Mail. When I try, I receive the following error message: There was an error in internet accounts preferences. I can't find anything online or in the help section. I have tried force stopping email in Activity Monitor and logging on in Safe Mode to troubleshoot but nothing has worked. I receive a similar error message when I attempt to open iCloud as well. Please help.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Preferences/MobileMeAccounts.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Hello, I am having this same problem of Mail launching but not finding my Accounts, and I get the same Preferences Error message.  I have tried your suggested answer, removing "MobileMeAccounts.plist" from the Library, restarting, and emptying the trash. This didn't help in my case.  I tried looking in the Library>Preferences folder on a recent backup of my computer on an external drive, but there is no "MobileMeAccounts.plist" file there. Is there anything else I can try?  Thanks for any help!

You might want to start your own post since this one is from last year. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.

Try re-indexing the mailboxes. This can take awhile if you have a lot of mail.

Reindex messages           For El Capitan, try looking in V3.
