possible virus

I know it's mighty hard to get a virus on a mac, but I recently tried to download a .jar file and trying to run it crashed java and now whenever I try to use the internet it's VERY slow and crashes frequently. what can I do?

imac g5, Mac OS X (10.4.6)

1. What happens with your connection when you disable java in Safari preferences?

2. What .jar file? Where did you find it? Have you tried trashing the file?

Hello cracker:

There are NO viruses that affect a Mac running OS X......none.

Clear the Safari cache as a beginning point for identifying your problem.

As an aside, what is a .jar suffixed file?

Barry,

As an aside, a .jar is a self-contained Java archive file - JARs are containers for Java Beans. (Think of it as a Java "executable.")
Which, by the way, is why I suggested that the OP turn off java in Safari preferences.

Clearing the Safari cache could help - if the .jar's in there.
