How to do a total Time Machine Backup

Hi, I currently have a MacBook Pro (~2011) which is on it's last leg. I purchased a MacBook Air, and want to transfer all of the current content from my Pro to the Air. I have a WD Passport that has only 500gb of data so these complete backups take up a lot of room. I wanted a fool-proof way to delete my old back up, perform a backup of my computer as is now, and then set up my Air from the backup of this computer. I don't know if I'm even asking for the impossible, but any suggestions would help!

This does not have the updated actions for Yosemite 10.10.3- which is what I am currently using. Any other advice? I backed up my old computer and am left with the external drive and my new computer which already passed the point of the initial set up.

That is true, it does not mention Yosemite but that does not change the process though. The instructions are still applicable.
