Q: Forcetouch Trackpad and Keyboard freezing on Mid-2015 15" MBP

I've just purchased the Mid-2015 15" MBP with the 2GB AMD Radeon GPU.

After transferring all my user files from my old Late-2011 17" MBP, the trackpad and keyboard periodically (usually soon after boot, and then randomly afterwards) lock up and become unresponsive, including the loss of haptic feedback. The OS itself continues to run.

The only thing that seems to fix it is plugging in any USB mouse - which makes everything work again immediately - and then unplugging it. Then it will keep working for a while. There doesn't seem to be any single catalyst.

I've reinstalled Yosemite from online recovery, but the problem persists.

Has anyone else encountered this issue or have any potential solutions? Could this be hardware or software? Does copying user files change any of the system files that deal with the trackpad and keyboard? It still happens even when logged into a new user account created after copying my old files over.

Do let me know if there's anything I should try out. Thanks!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

Gave up on this issue.  Have a brand new machine.  All is well now.

Apple replaced the logic board and display for me, at no charge because my MBP is within the one-year warranty. So far, no new occurrences of what I call the display freezing -- i.e., trackpad and keyboard actions having no visible effect until I close and reopen the cover. I did not lose any data, but everyone should remember to back up everything before bringing a machine in for service.

    Apple replaced my trackpad too.

The problem went away, for a while.

It's come back again though. Not as often as before, it used to freeze every 20 minutes or so, now it freezes every couple of hours.

Any suggestions before I go back to Apple support again?

I've got the same problem. Bought my MBP 15 only a few weeks ago. Noticed this issue within the first 5 hours of use. Trackpad locks up and does not depress when I attempt to click. Screen also appears frozen. I am very, very, disappointed. This is supposed to be a top-of-the-line notebook computer and considering what I paid for it it, should be absolutely flawless. I'm going in to my local Apple Store to demand a replacement tomorrow. I make a living with this machine and periodic freezing is completely unacceptable.

    Hi,

I live in Italy. We have the worse Apple Support here. I have brought in my MBP 2 times and after extensive testing they said that the MBP never froze.

I brought it back home and it happened again within the first 5 minutes.

I've had the OS replaced from scratch 2 times, once by Apple support in the store and nothing changed.

Apparently today it happened as I had a USB key plugged in.

The MBP was fine in the past days, while using it without USB mouse as well.

Has anyone found a solution? Have things changed with El Capitan? I am installing it now.

Or is it a HW problem?

    Hi all,

I have the Macbook Pro 15 inch retina mid 2015 model. It's not even been a week since I've had it and I've seen screen flickering, and my mouse has frozen a couple of times. I'm going to contact Apple support to get a new laptop, but I just wanted to say it's still happening with models they are shipping out. I really shouldn't have to nuke the problem by getting a totally new machine, what a shambles.

    Cheers

    Alex

I'm having the same problem. Trackpad and keyboard freezes. Strange thing is, I've discovered giving a tap under the laptop where the trackpad is fixes it temporarily.

Same issue for me (MBP 13" early 2015, El Capitan 10.11.2). Unresponsive keyboard and trackpad, sometimes after sleep, sometimes all of sudden. Bluetooth/USB keyboard & trackpad working. Tried resetting NVRAM, SMC, created another Admin session, Diagnostics, emptying cache, libraries (using CleanMyMac), Disk Permissions. Sometimes booting in Safe Mode does resolve the issue, but today it doesn't. Apple Support recommends formatting the hard drive and reinstalling the OS manually without using Time Machine (which I'm reluctant to do, this will take days to re-install everything). The trackpad/keyboard problem may happen when away from bluetooth mouse. I also have some bluetooth & wifi issues (disconnections). There are a number of discussions around this problem, but no-one seems to have been able to solve the issue, apart from the ones that had their Macbook serviced (change of keyboard/trackpad). Most worrying for such a recent high-range Macbook. I'd hope Apple would take this issue seriously and recall the defective model.

I seem to have the issue with a mid-2015 I purchased a month ago (to replace a mid 2010 that started having serious problems but couldn't be repaired because it was too old).  Now, I have had several moments where the screen seems to freeze.  Occasionally a computer reboot will occur.  I always send the report to Apple on restart.  Now just reading this thread makes me want to take my machine in and get a replacement (I did purchase apple-care and a 3 year plan from SimplyMac).  A little frustrating to have a new machine act like this - didn't think I had purchased a windows machine?

I'm having this issue too. Macbook Pro 2015 13-inch. I thought it was my whole laptop freezing up but Spotify was still playing music in the background. Happens about once a week, every single time randomly freezing locking up keyboard and trackpad while using trackpad. When I force click the trackpad a few times it stays pushed in until I restart the computer. I'll try putting it to sleep next time instead of turning it off.

***** because I need the laptop for work so I can't bring it into Apple Care anytime soon.

Same problems here (Retina, 13-inch,  Early 2015). It's becoming more frequent. The Force Touch trackpad locks up (you can't even feel it depress when trying to push down on it) and I can't move the pointer either. Don't know if it's a hardware or software problem. The only way to rectify this for me is to hold the power button down until the MacBook powers down and then switch it back on again.

I'm very surprised that Apple haven't responded to this accordingly.

I am also having this problem - MBP early 2015. The forcepad will not depress (same as when the computer is off), the screen is completely frozen, music will continue to run in background but the computer is otherwise completely unresponsive. This happens whether an external monitor is plugged in or not. Completely random - sometimes minutes to hours between instances. I have to force shut down / reboot the computer to resolve. Of course, more than 12 months since purchasing the computer and very disappointed this issue is occurring.

I am from China, also having this problem since one week I purchased. My MBP is MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), occurred sometimes after plugging off an external keyboard or mouse, I have to restart MBP without saving anything. It's terrible!!!!!

    Hi!

I also have this problem. The computer freezes and the keyboard and trackpad becomes completely unresponsive. I can feel that the “click” in the trackpad stops working. The only solution is to restart the computer by holding down the power button. The problem always comes when I use Safari and when there is some kind of embedded video on the web page.

I have a brand new Macbook Pro Retina 13¨, 8 GB RAM, 250GB SSD, Early 2015. The graphic card is Intel Iris Graphics 6100. The problem persists in Mac OS 10.11.4, but was solved by downgrading to 10.10.5 (More about that below).

When the problem occurred the first time I reacted immediately. I am a long time Mac user and have never encountered this kind of freeze in any of my computers. I started to search in forum for others who had this kind of problem. I immediately found hundreds of hits around 2013, when a similar problem was affecting the Macbook pro 13¨. That time Apple released a software update. But I also discovered this thread and some other discussions regarding the 2015 years’ model.

So my first question was if it was a hardware or software related problem. The last time the problem was reported back in 2013, Apple solved the problem with a software update. If the problem was related with the 2015 years’ model of Macbook pro, that would support the theory that it is in fact a software problem. The fact that not all Macbooks are affected would on the other hand support the idea that it Is a hardware problem affecting only a small number of computers.

I started to follow every recommended fix for the problem: I reset NVRAM and SMC, I checked the permissions, reformatted the ssd and reinstalled El Capitan. Nothing worked. The problem came back in a couple of days. I also tried every setting for the trackpad, and for the graphic card and for Safari (i.e. shutting of the use of web GL).

Then I read about people that was complaining about the 10.11.4 upgrade. They said that they didn’t have this problem before they upgraded to 10.11.4. That was the preinstalled version on my computer. I then googled and found out that my computer model had been shipped with Yosemite. I then decided to reformat the ssd and downgrade to 10.10.5 (the last version of Yosemite). Once I installed Yosemite 10.11.5 my problems was gone. The computer just worked day out and day in. One very important conclusion was that the problem is software related. There’s nothing wrong with the hardware. When I use 10.11.5 the computer never freezes.

So after a couple of weeks I started wondering what would happen if I clicked on the button “Upgrade to El Capitan”? I had a working computer, and maybe if I upgraded now the problem would not comeback (this Is what you could call magical thinking ;-) So I upgraded to El Capitan. In two days the problem was back.

So now I have a working computer running 10.10.5 and I have no freezes. Actually no problems at all. But I cannot upgrade to El Capitan. So am stock with Yosemite until Apple solves the problem. What I have read 10.11.5 don’t solve the problem. I hope Apple will fix it in a future update.

So what is my conclusion about the problem? I think it is a software problem (but probably connected to drivers/hardware of a certain model) that Apple needs to fix. I have reported the problem to Apples support channel twice, but have not heard back from them.
