Gmail set up problem with Apple mail

Yesterday my gmail stopped working, so I tried to Delete/ Add account again. I got this message "There was a problem setting up the Mail account.". My Calendar, Messages, and Contacts are synced properly, but I could not sync my Mail and Notes. It didn't say anything about a wrong passowrd.

When I go to Gmail account setting, I see that Mail is not checked, so I try to check it, but my check mark gets removed immediately; same thing happens with Notes.

Mail seems to be working just fine on my iPhone.
