The only sure way is to take his phone and look at them.

If you share an Apple ID, you can see his iMessages but, of course, he can also see yours. YOU can contact your carrier and see what type of parental control functions they offer. However, it would be fairly easy for your child to use things like Whatsapp, FaceBook Messenger or similar apps to communicate. You can lock down a number of things in Settings>General>Restrictions such as adding new apps including messaging apps.

Like it or not, this isn't a problem with a simple technical solution.

How old is he? If you bought the phone, then ask him. Is he of an age that he will hate you forever for prying?

There is no way to see your son's text messages if he doesn't want you to see them. Any more than you can hear his face-to-face conversations, notes he passes, or what he says on phone calls. Or where he goes.
