after update to Yosemite my external HDDs are no longer recognized

hi,

after a recent update to OS X Yosemite,

my WD external HDDs are no longer recognized (all Mac formatted und fully functional).

They are three different types and they neither show up in Finder or in the disc utility.

Tried Google without luck - only saw that thousands of users have the same problem.

Is it solvable or should I start thinking about undoing the update?

Thank you in advance!

Hi air_7up is the firmware up to date on all your drives?

This would be the first thing to check.

Secondly is the drive listed in Terminal?

Open Applications/Utilities/Terminal and enter the line below at the prompt then press return.

diskutil list

If the drive is available it will show up in the list created in terminal

Hope this helps.

found the following suggestion with Google:

disconnect all USB devices / plugs (including Cinema Display USB hub), restart the Macbook and connect the drive.

it works one time. the Cinema Display USB hub can be reconnected and the drive continues to be there.

but other new drives will not be recognised - until you disconnect the Cinema Display again...

so - it looks like the Cinema Display USB hub prevents HDDs from being recognized on the main USB ports.

just FYI - I never connected the HDDs via the Cinema Display - always directly to the MacBook USB ports...
