Are app store ratings from since the last release update, or from when the app first went live?

The stars you see for the app ratings in the review section...Do these ratings restart when you do a release/update? Or do they remain through from when the app first goes live and all add up? We have an app in the market and its latest release has received some negative reviews and poor ratings.
