Q: RAM slot not functioning?

On my 2006 iMac, RAM slot 0 does not seem to read any memory. I have tried both a 1 and 2GB stick, but it only shows that slot 1 is full in System Profiler. I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong or if the slot is just faulty. What should I do?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Use only Crucial or OWC (www.macsales.com) RAM. It is possible the slot is faulty however it is more likely that it is a RAM issue or the RAM is not seated fully.

Either the module is not fully seating or the slot is bad. If the slot is bad, then all you can do is install a 2GB module in the good slot.

Also, exactly which 2006 17" iMac do you have.....?

see > How to identify iMac models - Apple Support

The Early 2006 Core Duo 17" models memory controller only supports 2GB.

    It will only work with a total of 2GB  (1 + 1 = 2 or 2 + 0 = 2)

The Late 2006 Core 2 Duo 17" models memory controller only supports 3GB.

It will work with 2, 3 or 4GB
