Radeon 7950

I bought a RADEON 7950 graphics card it appears as 7xxx on my system report. I have an acer 1280 x 960, when I boot when connected via the DVI port, it boots for some time then the monitor goes off... can the monitor work on the graphics card or I need a higher resolution screen?
