How to access the usb ports and format an attached disk or flashdrive?

How can I access the USB ports so as to format an attached drive or USB flashdrive?

Total iMac noob here.

My keyboard doesn't have the Apple logo key.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.1.1

Choose Utilities from the Finder’s Go menu, open the Disk Utility, select the drive in the sidebar, click on the Erase tab, and reformat it from there.

Click on the icon on the Dock with the smiling face(it’s normally the one furthest to the left), and then move the cursor to the very top of the computer’s screen.

Finally understand! This weekend I have scheduled a one-on-one session with an Apple trainer and hope the clouds of confusion about OS X usage will dissipate.
