Go to your Mac Apple menu at the left end of the menubar and select "About this Mac":

For the older iMacs this forum covers, you should get a window similar to this:

Note the two red arrows I added to the image. Please tell us what those lines read when you produce that window on your computer. We cannot effectively advise you on upgrading without those bits on critical information.

If your computer is an old vintage PowerPC processor architecture and not an Intel core processor,

your OS X version is limited to Leopard 10.5.8 as the latest system it can run. That means, you Do

Not have an opportunity to upgrade to a later OS X version such as 10.6.8/10.7.5/10.8.5/10.9.5 or

10.10.x but you could get and use a good third party web browser such as it is, in TenFourFox.

{And if your old Mac has a PPC processor slower than 867MHz, it can't use Leopard 10.5.8, and

instead may be able to use Tiger 10.4.11. If not, some even older PPC models may use 10.3.9

since Panther, and older systems may still be OK but not terribly practical online. And browsers

are harder to come by, since almost nothing behind 10.4.11 (TenFourFox) sees updates.}

10.4.Fox can be used in older PPC versions of OS X Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard 10.5.8. It is free...

•TenFourFox: version of Mozilla Firefox made for Power PC Macintosh, Tiger & Leopard PPC:

Depending on which hardware version of PowerPC computer, there are different builds of TenFourFox.

Also, there may be a few other OK browsers available, such as iCab web browser that run free.

However, if you have a newer Intel-based computer running an OS X later than Leopard 10.5.8, you

could check into other browsers, yet some may be spotty. Older versions of Firefox from Mozilla may

or may not be satisfactory; some have seen few updates for use in old non-current OS X systems.

More recent OS X builds could use Firefox, but check their site to be sure. Older versions may be

compromised and have security issues. You could use an older browser and turn off Java, and Flash.

Plus be sure to not click on any questionable content, and be frugal in use, to avoid bad web sites;

also avoid downloading free questionable software that could be altered with bad contaminants.

Most recent Firefox, for Intel based Macs:

Old versions of Firefox may not tell you what they were meant to be used in, so that may be a problem.

•Install an older version of Firefox - firefox help:

Other mozilla-based browsers may be available, some offer combined email clients, and other differences.

There had been a SeaMonkey version for newer OS X and an old set of builds for PowerPC hardware at

a different site that catered to non-intel 10.5.8 vintage Mac users. The SeaMonkey for PPC is limited in use.

In any event, without more information there is no quick and simple answer. Otherwise, we'd have said it...

And, you did post in the iMac PPC section for old Macs, where the newest was about 9 years ago.

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂
