My Ipad is locked out, and to restore it it needs me to log in?

I haven't used my IPAD in months, and I cannot remember the lock code. I tried using find my Iphone, and that did not work. I am trying to place it in recovery mode now. However that is difficult because it is backing it up, and to back it up you need to log in. I do not need to back it up, all I want to do is factory reset it so that I can use my IPAD. Help?
