Q: Hard time to import to Photos 1. from iPhone 5 under IOS 8

Hello,

I never had issues with the older iPhoto but now with the Photos Version 1.0 (209.52.0). I get into really big trouble. When I simply want to import some photo from my iPhone 5 or 6 to Photos, the importing start then stop in about the middle of the importing process, the Photos software then respond to some command but stay inactive in the importing process. When I clic the button to stop import it doesn't seem to do anything, then if I try to Quit the software pop up a dialog box, asking me if I want to interupt the importing process. If I clic the I want to interrupt the process the Photos software try to quit but stay locked on trying to close Photos librairies !!. So then I forced quit to get again control.

I have try several time but I always have the same issue.

It seems to be a big bug of Photos

Some one can help ?

    John -

Thank you for your post!  I had been going crazy searching on this issue for days, when finally your post you wrote popped up just 17 minutes after you wrote it.

I am having the EXACT SAME problems with the new Photos Version and have been trying/retrying over and over the past 3-4 days.  The only variation is that sometimes, instead of stopping half way into the importing process (which I too have experienced), it never starts (no blue progress line), but tells me there is an import in progress and then won't let me stop the import.  Last night I kept the import process running overnight, in case it was just going to take some time to run, but the import never started over that 9 hours.  The Quit Photos experience is the same and I have to Force Quit too.  I've tried restarting my machine, and my phone, checked software updates, etc. but nothing has resolved the issue.

Sorry I can't help, but was relieved to see it just isn't me, maybe some relief for you too, wanted to share my exact same experiences, and hoping that since this seems to be a bigger bug we'll get help soon!

    Hi Bluejeannie !,

I have just try something that seems to have worked...

I have remove the Auto Lock of the iPhone  then re-start the mac with the iPhone USB cable connected, in the half time of the OS boot, the iphone have pop up a window asking me if I can trust this computer.. (strange ?) but whatever I have clic yes..

Then I have start Photos and re-import again, this time it have import all the photos and not just a part of them !

Not sure it will work again, tell me if it had work for you, good luck.

I don't understand why Apple don't secure a such important process ! importing family photo is by far the most important documents on ours Mac !!!

    John -

I went to follow your step by step, so went to Quit out of Photos, and it wouldn't quit again.  I kept selecting Quit, Quit, Quit and it just sat there as before.  I went to Restart and it gave me the message that Photos Interrupted the Restart (as before), so I tried to use the keyboard short cuts to Force Quit, and it wouldn't work again.  I am only mentioning this, again, because this seems to be some additional sort of bug that is occurring in this application that Apple may need to look at.  Also because it is very frustrating.

So, finally I got to a point where I was able to Force Quit out of Photos, turned off my Auto Lock on my iPhone, restarted my Mac (with the USB cable connected), restarted Photos, which took forever for some reason, and then was able to select Import All again.  I didn't get any movement on the progress bar for at least 3 minutes, but now it has been stuck for about 15 minutes with only about 1/8 progress on the bar.  I guess I'll let it sit here for a bit and see what happens.  However, at this point, it doesn't look like this work around is going to work for me.  Hoping a long term fix for this comes out soon where you can just plug in your phone and import photos like in iPhoto.  To your point, a super important process that was quick and seamless before and shouldn't require a work around.

Just an interesting note I forgot to mention before.  A few nights back, my husband was actually able to import photos from my iPad to our Mac with Photos.  So maybe only a bug when moving photos from an iPhone?  Would be interesting to see if anyone has had these issues with an iPad, but with the number of views on this thread in the short amount of time from your original post, thinking a lot of other folks are possibly having this issue..

PS.  8 minutes since I wrote this reply to your post and still no progress on movement for import..

    John -

Another interesting issue, that just happened and that has happened before, is that occasionally during the import/import standstill the Import 'Tab' disappears and gives some sort of alert (like the phone has been disconnected, but hasn't), but then appears again.  Did this happen to you as well?

That suggests that there may be a problem with the cable connecting the phone to your Mac. If it is not an Apple branded cable (like the one that came with the iPhone or iPad), or one from a well-known vendor (like Belkin or RocketFish) in a package with the MFi logo on it, that very well may cause all kinds of mysterious problems, including application hangs & data transfer errors. Even if it is a high quality cable, it could be damaged or there could be dirt or other contaminants interfering with a reliable connection.

So it would be a good idea to test with a known-good cable after inspecting the ports on the Mac & iPhone to make sure they are clean.

However, before doing that (or anytime after force quitting Photos) it is a good idea to try repairing the Photos Library before attaching your phone to it again. Also, sometimes just restarting the Mac will clear out corrupted temporary or cache files that can cause an app to hang.

@R C-R: Good remarks for those who haven't a Apple cable..

But in my case I have a "Apple cable in good conditions" and by the way it seems that nobody had really problems before using Photos instead of iPhoto so probably not really a cable problem at all.

    Hi R C-R -

Thank you for your notes.  The cable I have been using is in fact an Apple Cable.  A new one at that.

The fact that we were able to transfer photos from my iPad with this cable, that there has been a recurring hang issue on transfers where I don't see the Import Tab disappear, and that other people are seeing this same issue with Photos, still leads me to believe it is some sort of bug versus a cable or even a specific device issue.

I also didn't know about the Repairing Photos Library.  I'll ask my husband if he has tried doing that and if not, I will try this to see if it helps resolve the issue at all.

I appreciate your suggestions.  Thank you!

It could be a bug, but it also could be due to quite a few other things, for instance an incompatible third party addition to the system or damaged files of various kinds in various places. I know it is tempting to assume everyone reporting the same symptoms means their issues have the same cause, but unfortunately it rarely is that simple.

For what its worth, I just updated my 13 inch macbook pro (early 2011) to 16 gb of RAM and import seems to be working now. Its still not as fast as iPhoto, but considering I was stalled completely before - now I actually see it making progress so huge improvement.

I had only 4 gb before the upgrade. Apple official says you can only upgrade this model to 8gb but I did my research and the overwhelming feeling was it could handle the 16gb.

    Thanks R C-R -

I just think it's odd that we didn't have issues with the transfer from an iPad, but your right, it may not be a bug.

    shellbell1977 -

I will let my husband know about what you discovered with upgrading the RAM.

    Thanks to everyone on here.
