Using iMac as a monitor?

Does anybody know if an imac from 2008 (OS X 10.6.8) can be used as just a monitor for a Macbook pro OS X 10.9.5(mid 2012)

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

You can not use it as a normal monitor but could go through the hassle of using target disk mode.
